This course focuses on teaching young individuals American Sign Language (ASL) basics, including:

  • Learning the alphabet
  • Introducing themselves in ASL
  • Basic finger spelling techniques
  • Utilizing finger spelling to formulate words

Upon completion, they will receive a Certificate of Completion. ASL, spoken by a quarter of a million native signers and over two million others in the US, Canada, and Africa, offers a means to connect with diverse individuals in various settings. The language, relying on body language and facial expressions, enhances communication skills. One need not master every sign to understand ASL, as with mastering core vocabulary, one can comprehend and be understood in sign language. Learners can expand their vocabulary over time and learn new words contextually.

The modules cover the fundamentals of ASL, enabling communication with other signers and fostering the ability to learn additional signs. Sign language, used as the primary communication mode by millions globally, showcases its significance in Deaf communities across North America. American Sign Language, stemming from various influences, exhibits regional variation, reflecting unique geographical and cultural norms. While ASL shares some similarities with other sign languages, it maintains its distinct qualities.

While there are numerous sign languages worldwide, mastering ASL equips individuals to communicate with the majority of signers in North America. Learning ASL opens doors to connect with vast communities and broadens intercultural communication.
